Uma história de aprendizagem em artes - A history of art apprenticeship

Em 1943, nasce Arnaldo Navajas Filho, em São Paulo, capital, onde vive até ir morar em Ouro Preto, em 1979.
Aos 7 anos de idade, observa o trabalho e escuta as conversas sobre luz e cor entre artistas que trabalhavam com seu tio em decoração de interiores e pinturas de paredes. Um desses artistas foi Rebolo, outro Volpi.
Aos 12 anos, trabalha como auxiliar de escritório numa fundição de bronzes artísticos para cemitérios. Teve aí iniciação em escultura e fundição. Em seguida trabalha com publicidade na São Paulo Light.
Com 16 anos passa a trabalhar com o pai, decorador, na Alcântara Machado, no Pavilhão de Exposição, onde participa de grandes feiras como o Salão do Automóvel, UD, FENIT, dentre outras. O artista considera que os 12 anos nessa atividade foram uma “grande escola”, em que aprendeu muito sobre iluminação, decoração comercial, vitrinagem, projeção de stands, etc. Por questões de saúde, afasta-se da atividade em 1971 e inicia trabalhos em desenho de cidades brasileiras.
Em 1972, torna-se coordenador de uma oficina de restauração de carros antigos, em São Paulo, de um colecionador que na época chegou a ter 370 carros antigos e raros. As horas livres então são dedicadas à pesquisa em arte. Neste tempo começa a conviver e fazer consultas a importantes mestres como A. Castelani, Salvador Rodrigues, D’Mecatti, Aldo Cardarelli, Pacheco Ferraz, Aldo Malagoli, Jarbas Juarez, Alcides Navajas (seu tio) e Manuel Navarro. Começa a desenhar Ouro Preto a partir de fotografias.
Em 1973 visita Ouro Preto pela primeira vez. Fica 3 meses quando pinta 60 telas. Na véspera de sua volta à São Paulo conhece a ouropretana Solange Fortes, com quem se casa em 1975. Até 1979 vive entre Ouro Preto e São Paulo.
Em 1977 e 1978 , respectivamente, recebe a Pequena Medalha de Ouro e a Grande Medalha de Ouro da Exposição Embu das Artes, SP.
Em 1979, abre ateliê na Rua das Flores, em Ouro Preto, onde trabalha por 10 anos.
Em 1989, realiza três painéis para a ALCAN. A partir desse ano, busca com mais intensidade uma expressão pictórica mais pessoal abrindo espaço para a expressão e a abstração em seu trabalho. Seu grande amigo e mestre, Pacheco Ferraz, observa então que Naldo tem “olhar de pássaro” pois o artista parece desprender-se do chão e revelar uma visão pictórica acima do objeto.
In 1943, Arnaldo Navajas Filho was born in the capital of Sao Paulo were he lived until 1979 when he moved to Ouro Preto.
At seven years old, he started to observe art work and listen to conversation about light and color nuances between the artists who used to work with his uncle, an interior decorator. One of these artists was Rebolo; another was Volpi.
At twelve years old, he worked as an assistant in artistic graveyard smelting bronze. This was his initiation into sculpture smelting. Right after that, he worked for the Sao Paulo Light Company as a junior clerk, and later, working in the publicity area.
He started to work with his father when he was sixteen years old at the Alcantara Machado Company in the Exposition division, participating at the big automobile fairs, UD, FENIT, and others. In retrospect, the artist Naldo considers the twelve years on the job as a “tremendous growth experience”, where he learned a lot about illumination, commercial decoration, display window design, stands, etc. Do to a case of tuberculosis he left his work at the Company. While spending a period of time recovering he developed his drawings of the Brazilian cities.
In 1972 he became the restorations coordinator of the classic car’s workshop in Sao Paulo for a rare car collector who at one time had 370 classic cars. His free time was then dedicated to the study of art and developing his craft with his mentors A. Castelani, Salvador Rodrigues, D’ Mecatti, Aldo Cardarelli, Pacheco Ferraz, Aldo Malagoli, Jarbas Juares, Alcides Navajas (his uncle), and Manuel Navarro. He started next to paint Ouro Preto by photographs.
He visited Ouro Preto for the first time in 1973, where he stayed for a period of three months and during that time he painted 60 portraits. Right before his return to Sao Paulo he met Solange Fortes, a native of Ouro Preto, who he then later married in 1975. For the next four years he traveled between Ouro Preto and Sao Paulo.
In 1977 and 78 respectively he was awarded with two gold medals for outstanding art during the Art Embu Exposition in Sao Paulo. The next year he opened a gallery in Ouro Preto, at the Rua das Flores, where he worked for ten years. In 1989 he painted three panoramic landscape panels for the Alcan – Canadian Aluminum Company based in Ouro Preto. At this point in his life he started searching intensely for a personal pictorial expression, opening room for more abstraction and personification in his work. Pacheco Ferraz, his mentor and great friend then observed that Naldo had an “eagle eye”, and the ability to raise himself about the subject and gain a perspective from a higher vantage point.
